The paper mulberry is a fast-growing deciduous tree that can reach a height of 12 - 15m. It has alternate and simple leaves that present a variety of forms depending on maturity. Its fruit is reddish-orange in color, composed of small, fleshy fruits called mulberries.

The bark of the paper mulberry is composed of very strong fibers from which fibers similar to those of flax and hemp are extracted, so it is used to manufacture high quality paper, especially handmade paper.
